Gmail Recently Launched the Priority Inbox feature, I enabled and used it, and what I realized was, that this Priority Inbox feature is nothing but just an extension, or maybe you can say a smarter and automated version of Multiple Inboxes.
If you remember Multiple Inboxes, it is a way to segregate the emails based upon several criteria in different panels. Read more…
Now what is Priority Inbox actually doing?
Priority Inbox is designed in a way that it closely keeps track of the activities you do on an email from particular sender, particular subject etc. these activities could be anything right from sending frequent replies, opening and reading the emails, or maybe using the links in that particular email to visit other pages. Based upon these activities it decides which emails are important to you, and hence prioritizes the emails from particular sender, or may be an email with a particular subject line (in the snapshot below, very first email in the ‘Important and unread’ is from the same sender as the first email in ‘Everything else’ panel, the difference is the Subject of both the emails).

You have an option to choose the types of email in Priority Inbox; this can be done using the drop down menu, as shown below.

Now, why am I calling Priority Inbox a smarter and automated version of Multiple Inbox, as far as the layout thing is concerned, it resembles exactly to Multiple Inbox, now what it is doing too resembles the Multiple Inbox, based upon the email address of sender and the subject line, it decides an email to be Important or Unimportant, and arranges them in panels which is exactly what a Multiple Inbox can do. Just the factor that Gmail using ‘Priority Inbox’ now automatically decides an email to be important, which wasn’t available in Multiple Inboxes.
My Verdict about Priority Inbox
In my opinion, Priority Inbox is not something very useful, as far as you know the ways to filter the emails, to make a very high end priority inbox for your inbox, the best way is using the filers and the Multiple Inboxes.
Issue with Priority Inbox
Another issue with Priority Inbox is as soon as a new email arrives in your inbox, i.e. an email from a sender who has sent you an email for the first time, now an important email could be from a first time sender, isn’t it, which as per the policy of Priority Inbox, will appear under the Everything Else section, which could be a disaster, if you are blindly relying upon the Priority Inbox.
This is all about my experience with Priority Inbox, have you been using the Priority Inbox, did you like it? Share your views about it with us via comments, if you disagree or find something incorrect in my analysis, do correct me.
